Alexander Payne, who never gush The Descendants and Sideways presents the latest comedy-drama in downsizing. In this newest film, Payne hooks a line of Hollywood actors and actresses such as Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, and Kristen Wiig.
Presented by Paramount Pictures, the first trailer of this 2 minutes 31-second film has been watched by around 8.5 million people worldwide.
Synopsis Downsizing
Downsizing tells the story of a husband and wife Paul (Matt Damon) and Audrey Safranek who decide to shrink their bodies to small. They plan to join a new community of people who have shrunk their bodies. The community lives in Leisureland.
The idea of shrinking the body to 5 inches is a discovery spearheaded by Paul’s classmates Dave and Carol Johnson. This idea was sparked since fifteen years ago but was only put forward in general at a college reunion with Paul. This discovery itself was made to create an environmentally friendly life and improve the quality of human life because with a small body Dave believes that the waste produced must be reduced and humans can pay less.
But this discovery caused problems for Paul alias Matt Damon, the article of his wife played by Kristen Wiig chose to leave because he did not want to shrink his body at the last minute after having agreed and moved to Leisureland.
Not only that, a year later, but new problems also came to Paul after he decided to divorce with Audrey. He moved to a new apartment and worked as telemarketing in Land’s End. He realized that he regretted taking the initial decision to shrink the body, and broke up with his new girlfriend at a party at his neighbour Dusan’s house.
A more complex problem is whacking Paul where this problem involves Ngoc Lan Tran, an illegal immigrant from Vietnam whose leg broke when he was smuggled into a television box to America so that he is now using a prosthetic leg but has been damaged.
Intending to fix Ngoc Lan’s prosthetic limb, Paul damaged it. Instead, Paul worked for Ngoc Lan because Ngoc Lan could no longer work. Involved in the rescue of Ngoc Lan’s friend in food smuggling in the slums, Dusan came to rescue Paul and intended to take him to Norway, but the action was spotted by Ngoc Lan, who insisted on coming.
Continuously getting into trouble since the body’s shrinkage decision was made, Dr Asbjørnsen met them. Who is Dr.Asbjørsen, and what will happen next to Paul? Will he be involved in a new problem that is bigger than the previous issues? And how is the relationship with the ex-wife?
